  • question_answer
Enthalpy of neutralization of \[C{{H}_{3}}COOH\]by. \[NaOH\] is \[-50.6kJ/mol\] and the heat of neutralisation of a strong acid with \[NaOH\] is \[-55.9kJ/mol\]. The value of \[\Delta H\] for the ionisation of \[NaOH\] is :

    A)  \[3.5kJ/mol\]

    B)         \[4.6kJ/mol\]

    C)                         \[5.3kJ/mol\]

    D)         \[6.4kJ/mol\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Enthalpy of neutralization is denned as amount of heat liberated when one mole of a strong acid is completely neutralized by one mole of a strong base. Its value is less in case of weak acid or weak base because small amount of heat is utilized in ionising the weak acid/base. \[\Delta H\] for ionisation of \[C{{H}_{3}}COOH\] = Heat of neutralization for \[C{{H}_{3}}COOH-\] Heat of neutralization of strong acid \[=-50.6-(-55.9)kJ/mol\] \[=+\text{ }5.3kJ/mol\]
