Zygospore of Spirogyra at the time of meiosis is divided into four nuclei. How many nuclei degenerate out of these four?

    A)  One

    B)  Two

    C)        Three

    D)        Four

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Zygospore is formed by the union of male and female gametes. So, it is a diploid structure. It divides by meiosis division and forms four haploid nuclei. Out of four three become degenerate and rest one functions as functional nucleus. Under favourable condition it germinates and forms a haploid Spirogyra plant.
