  • question_answer
A gun fires a bullet of mass 50 g with a velocity of 30 m/s. Due to this, the gun is pushed back with a velocity of 1 m/s, then the mass of the gun is:

    A)  1.5kg

    B)                        5.5kg

    C)  0.5 kg

    D)                         3.5kg

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Key Idea: Momentum: remains conserved in the process. If no external force acts upon a system of two (or more) bodies then the total momentum of the system remains constant, Hence, momentum before collision                            = momentum after collision \[v=-2u\] Given, \[{{u}_{1}}=1\,m/s,\,\,{{u}_{2}}=0.05\,\,kg,\,{{v}_{2}}=30\,m/s\] \[\Rightarrow \]  \[-\frac{1}{15}=\frac{1}{u}-\frac{1}{2u}=\frac{1}{2u}\] \[\Rightarrow \]  \[u=-\frac{15}{2}=-7.5cm\]
