    Mitochondria are thread or rod shaped bodies of 3-5u diameter and 40 u length and are absent in prokaryotic cells. Mitochondria are the sites of cellular respiration and oxidative phosphorylation, here synthesis of ATP take place. ATPs (adenosine triphosphate) are known as immediate source of energy. They are also known as energy coins of the cells. In this way mitochondria are popularly known as "Power house" of the cell.
