    Water gas is produced by:

    A)  passing steam over red hot coke

    B)  passing steam and air over red hot coke

    C)  burning coke in excess of air

    D)  burning coke in limited supply of air

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Water gas is produced by passing steam over red hot coke at \[1000-{{1400}^{o}}C\]. \[\underset{Colse}{\mathop{C}}\,+\underset{Steam}{\mathop{{{H}_{2}}O}}\,\xrightarrow{1000-{{1400}^{o}}C}\underbrace{Co+{{H}_{2}}}_{Water\,gas};\] \[\Delta H=+28kcal\] water gas consist of 40 volumes of \[CO\], 50 volumes of \[{{H}_{2}}\],  5 volumes of \[C{{O}_{2}}\] and 4-5 volumes of \[{{N}_{2}}\]. Producer gas is obtained by passing air over red hot coke. \[2C+{{O}_{2}}+4{{N}_{2}}\to \underbrace{2CO+4{{N}_{2}}}_{\Pr oducer\,gas}\]
