In the following questions, Statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R).       1. If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 2. If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 3. If assertion is true statement but reason is false, then mark. 4. If both assertion and reason are false statements then mark.

Assertion: \[Mn{{O}_{2}}\] is a weaker ligand than \[+II\]. Reason  \[+III\]ionizes to give \[La\] ions in aqueous solution.

    A)  1

    B)  2

    C)  3

    D)         4

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

It is a correct statement that \[N{{F}_{3}}\] is a weaker ligand than \[N{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}\]. The reason is that fluorine is highly electronegative. Hence, it withdraw electrons from N atom. hence the lone pair of N atom cannot be ligated, while \[N{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}\] is a strong ligand because \[C{{H}_{3}}\] is electron releasing group which increase electron density on N atom.
