Which one of the following is a matching pat of certain organisms (s) and the kind of association?

    A)  Shark and sucker fish?commensalism

    B)  Algae and fungi in lichens?mutualism

    C)  Orchids growing on tress?parasitism

    D)  Cuscuta (dodder) growing on other flowering plants?epiphytism

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Shark and sucker fish (Echenis) association is an eample of commensalism (without continuous contact). By means of its dorsal fin, the sucker fish attaches to the underside of sharks and thereby secures scrap of food, wide geographical dispersal and protection. While in lichens algae and fungi are associated under mutualism. In this question option a and b both are correct. Mutualism is a mutal benefitted association in which both the organisms are benefitted. But symbiosis (living together) is a special condition of mutualism in which both the organisms (forming association) have close, permanent physical association, e.g., Lichens, in which fungi and algae form a close physical association.
