In almost all Indian metropolitan cities like Delhi the major atmospheric pollutant (s) is/are:

    A)  suspended particulate matter (SPM)

    B)  oxides of sulphur

    C)  carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide

    D)  oxides of nitrogen

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In all metropolitan cities of India 800-1000 tones pollutants are being emitted in air daily. Of which 50% comes from automobile. In Delhi during peak hours automobiles emit 700 kg of CO, 250 kg of hydrocarbons and 60 kg of \[N{{O}_{x}}\]. On an average, 1000 litres of fuel of a car produces 350 kg CO, 0.6 kg \[S{{O}_{2}},\] 0.1 kg of lead and 1.5 kg of SPM. In response to harmful effect, carbon monoxide (CO) combines with haemoglobin of blood and impairs its oxygen carrying capacity. While excess \[C{{O}_{2}}\] attract heating radiations of sun to the earth resulting in rise in temperature of earth (greenhouse effect) and considered as main greenhouse gas.
