If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 2. If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 3. If assertion is true statement but reason is false, then mark. 4. If both assertion and reason are false statements then mark.

Assertion: Water and mineral uptake by root hairs from the soil occurs through apoplast until it reaches endodermis. Reason: Casparian strips in endodermis are suberized.

    A)  1

    B)        2

    C)        3

    D)        4

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Transportation of water and minerals, mostly takes place through the apoplast pathway. In this pathway water moves from cell wall of one cell to the adjacent cell wall of other cells. This apoplast movement becomes obstructed at the endodermis layer due to the presence of casparian strip in the radial walls of endodermal cells. These casparian striped radial walls are impregnated with the suberin, a wax like substance barrier to water and other solute movement.
