In the following questions, Statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R).       1. If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 2. If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 3. If assertion is true statement but reason is false, then mark. 4. If both assertion and reason are false statements then mark.

Assertion: The earth is slowing down and as a result the moon is coming nearer to it. Reason: The angular momentum of the earth moon system is not conserved.

    A)  1

    B)                                        2

    C)        3

    D)        4

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Earth is not slowing down. Angular momentum of earth-moon system is conserved, had it not been so, then Keplers second law of planetary motion would not have been valid. Keplers second law states that \[\frac{dA}{dt}=\frac{J}{2m}=\text{constant}\] where , \[\frac{dA}{dt}\] is areal speed, J is angular momentum, m is mass. Hence, angular momentum is constant.
