In the following questions, Statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R).       1. If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 2. If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 3. If assertion is true statement but reason is false, then mark. 4. If both assertion and reason are false statements then mark.

Assertion: The resistivity of a semiconductor increases with temperature. Reason: The atoms of a semiconductor vibrate with larger amplitude at higher temperatures thereby increasing its resistivity.

    A)  1

    B)                        2

    C)        3

    D)        4

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Solids whose electrical conductivity is intermediate between conductor and insulators are called semiconductors. Carbon, silicon and germanium are example of semiconductors. The temperature coefficient of resistance of semiconductors is negative that is their electrical resistance decreases (or conductivity   increases) with rise in temperature. Note: At absolute zero a semiconductor becomes an ideal insulator.
