In the following questions, Statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R).       1. If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 2. If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark. 3. If assertion is true statement but reason is false, then mark. 4. If both assertion and reason are false statements then mark.

Assertion: The length of the day is slowly increasing. Reason: The dominant effect causing a slowdown in the rotation of the earth is the gravitational pull of other planets in the solar system.

    A)  1

    B)                                        2

    C)        3

    D)        4

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Angular speed of earth is given by \[\omega =\frac{2\pi }{T}\] hence, length of day (T) depends upon angular speed \[(\omega )\] of earth, about its own axis. Also Keplers second law of motion which is also law of conservation of angular momentum holds true for sun-earth system. Hence, earths rotation is not slowing down.
