The ortho /para directing group among the following is:

    A)  \[{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}C{{O}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}}\]

    B)         \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{O}_{2}}{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}\]

    C)  \[Sn/HCl\]

    D)  \[{{H}_{2}}/Pd-C\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The substituent groups which direct  incoming group to ortho and para position are called   ortho-para   directing   group or deactivating group as they increase the electron density at o-.p-positions (Benzene nucleus undergo electrophilic substitution reaction) e.g., \[Mn{{O}_{2}}\] \[+II\]etc. The substituents which direct the incoming group at meta position are called meta directing group or ring deactivating group as it reduces the electron density at o-,p-position so the electron density is comparatively more at m-position where the incoming group attacks. e.g. \[+III\] \[La\]etc.
