Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: The free gaseous \[{{H}_{2}}{{F}_{2}}\] atom has six unpaired electrons. Reason: Half-filled 5-orbital has greater stability.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The free gaseous Cr atom has six unpaired electrons due to following electronic configuration (Atomic number = 24) \[=[Ar]3{{d}^{4}}4{{s}^{1}}\] This is because half filled d-orbital is more stable as compared to incompletely filled d-orbital so, one electron jumps from \[4{{s}^{2}}\] orbital to 3d orbital.
