Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Sucrose is a non-reducing sugar. Reason: It has glycosidic linkage.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Sucrose \[({{C}_{12}}{{H}_{22}}{{O}_{11}})\] a disaccharide is a non-reducing sugar and so, it does not reduce Tollens reagent or Fehling reagent. It is due to the presence of glycosidic linkage which is present between \[\alpha -\beta \] glucopyranose and \[\beta -D\]fructofuranose units. Due to this glycosidic linkage sucrose has no free aldehydic or ketonic group.
