Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: The \[NO_{2}^{-}\]of acetic acid is lower than that of phenol. Reason: Phenoxide ion is more resonance stabilised.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Low value of \[pKa\] corresponds to more acidic compound. Acetic acid \[(p{{K}_{a}}=4.0)\]is more acidic than phenol \[(p{{K}_{a}}=9.0)\]. It is due to then fact that carboxylate ion is more stabilized due to resonance.
