Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Molar entropy of vaporisation of water is different from ethanol. Reason: Water is more polar than ethanol.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Molar heat of vaporisation of water is more than ethanol because of presence of stronger H-bonding in water as compared to ethanol due to which large amount of energy is required to break H-bond in \[{{H}_{2}}O\]. Ethanol is a volatile liquid (less heat of vaporisation) due to weak H-bond. It is also true that \[{{H}_{2}}O\] is more polar than ethanol.
