Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Copper metal gets readily corroded in an acidic aqueous solution. Reason: Free energy change for this process is positive.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Copper is quiet unreactive. It is less reactive than hydrogen and lie below hydrogen in electrochemical series so it cannot displace \[{{H}_{2}}\]from dilute acids. Thus it is not easily corrode in acidic solutions moreover, corrosion is a spontaneous process for which free energy change must be negative.
