Assertion: Nitrogen fixing enzyme in le root nodules function at low oxygen concentration. Reason: Low oxygen concentration provided by leghaemoglobin.

    A)  A

    B)                                        B

    C)        C

    D)        D

    E)  E

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Bacterium Rhizobium is found in the root nodules of legume plants and forms a positive interaction called symbiosis. These bacterium can fix atmospheric nitrogen in these plants. This nitrogen fixation is possible due to presence of enzyme nitrogenase in the bacterium. This enzyme functions under low oxygen concentration or in anaerobic condition. This anaerobic condition. is provided by leghaemoglobin. It combins with oxygen and thus protects nitrogenase by high oxygen concentration.
