The reagent used for the separation of acetaldehyde from acetophenone is:

    A) \[Al{{(OH)}_{3}}\]

    B)                        \[Be{{(OH)}_{2}}\]

    C) \[B{{(OH)}_{3}}\]

    D) \[({{H}_{3}}B{{O}_{3}})\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Acetaldehyde \[{{180}^{o}}\] and acetophenone \[Mg{{(OH)}_{2}}\] both react with phenyl hydrazine \[Al{{(OH)}_{3}}\] and hydroxyl amine \[Be{{(OH)}_{2}}\]. It also give iodoform test with \[B{{(OH)}_{3}}\] But acetophenone does not give addition compound with \[({{H}_{3}}B{{O}_{3}})\] unlike \[B{{(OH)}_{3}}\].
