Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Borax bead test is not suitable for Al (III). Reason:  \[A{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] is insoluble in water.

    A) If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.

    B) If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

    C) If Assertion is true but Reason is false.

    D) If both Assertion and Reason are false.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

It is true that Borax bead test is not suitable for Al (III) ions. This test is used only to detect some coloured ions like \[C{{u}^{2+}},N{{i}^{2+}},C{{o}^{2+}},C{{r}^{3+}}\]etc. Whose salts reacts with boric anhydride \[({{B}_{2}}{{O}_{3}})\] to form met borates having specific colours. Hot transparent bead of \[{{B}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] on Pt wire is touched with speck of salt and heated in an oxidising flame and then reducing flame. From the colour of bead in hot and cold, the basic radical can be predicted. \[A{{l}^{3+}}\] does not show any colour. It is also true that \[A{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] is insoluble in water.
