Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Addition of \[N{{H}_{4}}OH\] to an aqueous solution of \[BaC{{l}_{2}}\] in the presence of \[N{{H}_{4}}Cl\] (excess) precipitates \[Ba{{(OH)}_{2}}\] Reason:  \[Ba{{(OH)}_{2}}\] is insoluble in water.

    A) If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.

    B) If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

    C) If Assertion is true but Reason is false.

    D) If both Assertion and Reason are false.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Both assertion and reason are false. \[B{{a}^{2+}}\] has been put in group Vth for qualitative analysis.          It is precipitated as carbonate by \[{{(N{{H}_{4}})}_{2}}C{{O}_{3}}\] in the presence of \[N{{H}_{4}}Cl\] and \[N{{H}_{4}}OH\].  \[N{{H}_{4}}Cl\] suppress the degree  of ionisation of \[{{(N{{H}_{4}})}_{2}}C{{O}_{3}}.\]. Solubility product of Vth group radicals are quite low and hence, they are           precipitated with even low \[CO_{3}^{2-}\] concentration but cations of VI th group which have higher solubility product are not precipitated. Also \[Ba{{(OH)}_{2}}\] is soluble in \[{{H}_{2}}O.\]
