Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: t-butyl methyl ether is not prepared by the reaction of f-butyl bromide with sodium meth oxide. Reason: Sodium meth oxide is a strong nucleophile.

    A) If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.

    B) If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

    C) If Assertion is true but Reason is false.

    D) If both Assertion and Reason are false.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

t-butyl methyl ether cannot be prepared by reaction of t-butyl bromide with sodium methoxide because sodium methoxide is a strong base hence c-halide undergo elimination  reaction  rather instead of nucleophilic substitution reaction \[C{{H}_{3}}-\underset{C{{H}_{3}}}{\mathop{\underset{|}{\mathop{\overset{C{{H}_{3}}}{\mathop{\overset{|}{\mathop{C}}\,}}\,}}\,}}\,-Br+C{{H}_{3}}ONa\xrightarrow{{}}\] \[\underset{2-methyl\,\,propene}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}-\underset{C{{H}_{3}}}{\mathop{\underset{|}{\mathop{C}}\,}}\,=C{{H}_{2}}+NaBr}}\,\] \[C{{H}_{3}}ONa\]is also a strong nucleophile \[(C{{H}_{3}}{{O}^{-}})\]
