Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Frictional forces are conservative forces. Reason: Potential energy can be associated with frictional forces.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

A field of force such that the work done on or by a body so that it is displaced in the field is independent of the path. Hence, if a body is moved in a closed path the net work done is zero. Gravity and an electro static field in vacuum are conservative. But any form of friction prevents    the field from being conservative. Also potential energy cannot be associated with frictional forces.
