Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Coloured cations can be identified by borax bead test. Reason: Transparent bead  \[(NaBO{{  }_{2}}+{{B}_{2}}O{{  }_{3}})\] forms coloured bead with coloured cation.

    A) If both Assertion: and Reason: are true and the Reason: is the correct explanation of the Assertion:

    B) If both Assertion: and Reason: are true but the Reason: is not the correct explanation of the Assertion:

    C) If Assertion: is true but Reason: is false

    D) If both Assertion: and Reason: are false

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Borax, when heated at about 740°C, forms a glassy bead. \[CaC{{l}_{2}}+{{O}_{2}}.\] This glassy bead gives different colour beads with different cations. Hence, it is used to identify cations in qualitative analysis. This test is called borax bead test.
