Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Alkynes are more reactive towards nucleophilic addition reaction as compared to alkenes. Reason: Alkynes contain two pi bonds, while alkenes have only one bond.

    A) If both Assertion: and Reason: are true and the Reason: is the correct explanation of the Assertion:

    B) If both Assertion: and Reason: are true but the Reason: is not the correct explanation of the Assertion:

    C) If Assertion: is true but Reason: is false

    D) If both Assertion: and Reason: are false

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Although there are more n electrons associated with the triple bond, the sp hybridized carbon exert a strong attraction for these n electrons which are consequently bound more tightly to the functional group than are the tt electrons of a double bond. Hence, a nucleophile attack more readily on triple bonded carbon atom.
