NEET AIPMT SOLVED PAPER 1999

  • question_answer
In the following radioactive decay, \[_{92}{{X}^{232}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}{{\,}_{89}}{{Y}^{220}}\], how many \[\alpha \] and \[\beta \] particles are ejected from X to Y?

    A)              3\[\alpha \] and 2\[\beta \]

    B)              5\[\alpha \] and 3\[\beta \]

    C)              3\[\alpha \] and 3\[\beta \]

    D)              5\[\alpha \] and 5 \[\beta \]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

By mean of emission of an \[\alpha \]-particle the atomic number is decreased by two unit while mass number is decreased by four unit, but in case of emission of one, \[\beta \]-particle the atomic number is increased by one unit while mass number is not effected                 \[_{92}{{X}^{232}}\underset{-3\beta }{\mathop{\xrightarrow{-3\alpha \,and}}}\,{{\,}_{89}}{{Y}^{220}}\]             So, \[3\alpha \] and \[3\beta \] particles are ejected.
