NEET AIPMT SOLVED PAPER 2000

  • question_answer
A compound contains atoms of three elements A, B and C. If the oxidation number of A is +2, B is +5, and that of C is -2, the possible formula of the compound is:

    A)                 \[{{A}_{2}}{{(B{{C}_{3}})}^{2}}\]

    B)                 \[{{A}_{3}}{{(B{{C}_{4}})}^{2}}\]

    C)                         \[{{A}_{3}}{{({{B}_{4}}C)}_{2}}\]

    D)                 \[AB{{C}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

                                            In \[{{A}_{3}}{{(B{{C}_{4}})}^{2}}\]                 \[3\times O.N.\,of\,A+2\,[O.N.\,of\,B+4\times O.N.\,of\,C]=0\]                 \[3\times (-2)+2\,[+5+4\,\times (-2)]=0\]                 \[+6+2\,[-3]=0\]                 Hence, in the compounds \[{{A}_{3}}{{(B{{C}_{4}})}_{2}},\]  the oxidation number of A, B and C are +2, +5 and ?2 respectively.
