The number of atoms per unit cell in bcc lattice is:

    A)                            1

    B)                 2

    C)                 4

    D)                 9

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Key Idea: In case of bcc lattice, there are eight atoms at the eight corners of the unit cell and one atom at the body centre.                 Number of atoms per unit cell is given by                 \[N={{N}_{b}}+\frac{{{N}_{f}}}{2}\times \frac{{{N}_{c}}}{8}\]                 where \[{{N}_{b}}=\] number of atoms centred in this body                 \[{{N}_{f}}\] number of atoms centred in the face                 \[{{N}_{c}}\] number of atoms centred at the corner                 For bcc structure, \[{{N}_{b}}=1,\,\,{{N}_{f}}=0\] and \[{{N}_{c}}=8\]                 \[\therefore N=1+\frac{0}{2}+\frac{8}{8}=2\]
