The Lassaigne's extract is boiled with cone\[\text{HN}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\]while testing for halogens. By doing so it

    A)  helps in the precipitation of \[AgCl\]

    B)  increases the solubility product of \[AgCl\]

    C)  increases the concentration of \[NO_{3}^{-}\] ions

    D)  decomposes \[\text{N}{{\text{a}}_{\text{2}}}\text{S}\] and NaCN, if formed

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

\[N{{a}_{2}}S\]and \[NaCN\], if present in the extract, will be decomposed to  \[{{H}_{2}}S\] and \[HCN\] by \[HN{{O}_{3}}\]. \[NaCN+HN{{O}_{3}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}NaN{{O}_{3}}+HCN\] \[N{{a}_{2}}S+2HN{{O}_{3}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}2NaN{{O}_{3}}+{{H}_{2}}S\] These will escape from the solution and will not interfere with the test for halogens.
