Release of a neurotransmitter at a synapric junction is brought about by

    A)                  sodium

    B)  potassium

    C)                  chloride

    D)  calcium

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Release of Neurotransmitter at synaptic junction is brought about by calcium. Calcium potentiates the synaptic vessicle to move to the presynaptic membrane fuse with it and discharge neurotransmitter into synaptic cleft. Sodium Neuron possesses trigger zone on their membranes where voltage gated channels are densely clustured. The stimulus causes the opening of voltage gated Na4 channel. There is rapid inflow of Na^ ions, which whips out the local electrical potential difference. The phenomenon is called depolarisation. Potassium ion channels help in repolarisation.
