The so called tertian periodicity of Plasmodium vivox refers to the

    A)                  pre- erythrocytic phase

    B)                  post- erythrocytic phase

    C)                  erythrocytic phase

    D)                  sexual phase

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In Plasmodium vivax, erythrocytic cycle is completed after every 48 hours. Repeated erythrocytic cycle results not only in intermittent attack of fever but also in a large scale destruction of RBCs weakening the patient to a considerable extent. Pre-erythrocytic cycle is the first exoerythrocytic cycle in liver, after which parasites reappear in blood (their normal site of infection).
