A gene that has multiple effects is called

    A)                  dominant gene

    B)  mutant gene

    C)                  pleiotropic gene

    D)  operator gene

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Pleiotropic genes are genes, which influence more than one trait. A pleiotropic gene often has a more evident effect on one trait called major effect and less evident effect on other trait called secondary or minor effect. When a number of related changes are caused by pleiotropic gene, the phenomenon is called pleiotropism. Dominant gene describes the allele that is expressed in the phenotype when two different alleles of a gene are present in the cells of an organism. Mutant gene is a gene that has undergone a heritable change, especially one with visible effect, ie, change in genotype is associated with a change in phenotype. Operator gene gives passage to RNA polymerase when the structural genes are to express themselves.
