In tissue culture of parenchyma, mitosis are accelerated in the presence of

    A)                  auxin only

    B)                  cytokinin only

    C)                  Both (a) and (b)

    D)                  gibberellin and auxin

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Auxins cause cell enlargement, which is caused by solubilization of carbohydrate, loosening of wall microfibrils, synthesis of more wall materials, increased membrane permeability and respiration. Cytokinins are essential for cytokinesis though chromosome doubling can occur in their absence. In the presence of auxins, cytokinins bring about division even in permanent cells. Gibberellins stimulate intemodal growth so as to overcome dwarfism and promote growth both in stem and leaves.
