The grittiness of the pulp guava fruit is due to presence of

    A)                  sclereids

    B)  tracheids

    C)                  fibres

    D)  companion cells

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Sclereid is a type of sclerenchymatous cell that is shorter than fibre. They are usually scattered singly or in groups in the plant body especially in phloem, fruit wall and in the pulp of fruits and seeds. They provide rigidity to the structure, in which they are found. The grittiness of the fruits like guava and pears is due to the occurrence of stone cells or sclereids in group in their pulp. Tracheids are elongated, tube like dead single cells, with hard, thick and lignified walls. Water flows from one tracheid to another through unthickened regions (pits) in the cell wall. Fibres are quite strong due to lignified walls. When these group together, their strength is greatly increased. Thus, they are able to provide mechanical support to the tissue in which they are found. Companion cells are cells of phleom. They are thin walled elongated cells associated with each sieve tube. They are living and contain dense protoplasm and large elongated nucleus.
