In a thermodynamic process pressure of a fixed mass of a gas is changed in such a manner that the gas releases 20 J of heat and 8 J of work is done on the gas, if the initial internal energy of the gas was 30 J. The final internal energy will be

    A)  36 J

    B)  15 J

    C)  18 J

    D)  9 J

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

                     From first law of thermodynamics                 \[\Delta Q=\Delta Q+W\] where   \[\Delta U={{U}_{f}}-{{U}_{i}}\]                 and heat released \[=20\,J=-\Delta Q\]                 \[\therefore \]  \[\Delta W=-8\,J,\,\,\,{{U}_{i}}=30\,J\]                                 \[\Delta U=\Delta Q-\Delta W\]                                 \[\Delta U=-20-(-8)=-12\,J\] Final internal energy                                 \[{{U}_{f}}={{U}_{i}}+\Delta U\]                 = 30 - 12 = 18 J
