The two ends of amylose chain are designated as

    A)                  5 and 3 ends

    B)                  N- terminal and C- terminal ends

    C)                  reducing and non- reducing ends

    D)                  None of the above

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The two ends of amylose chain are designated as reducing end (the end of a polysaccharide having a terminal sugar with a free aromatic carbon) and non-reducing end. Amylose is a linear polymer of D glucose residues in a 1-4 linkage. 5 and 3 ends are present in DNA and RNA strands. Replication of DNA starts from 5 end and goes towards 3 end. In a polypeptide, the amino acid residue at the end with a free a-amino group is called amino terminal (or N-terminal) residue and the residue at the other end, which has free carboxyl group is called carboxyl terminal (C- terminal) residue.
