Predominant form of lipid present in biomembranes

    A)                  triacylglycerols

    B)  cholesterol

    C)                  free fatty acids

    D)                         phospholipids

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Structural lipids present in biomembrane are phospholipids. In these lipids polar head group is joined to the hydrophobic moiety by a phosphor diester linkage like glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids. Triacyl glycerol is an ester of glycerol with 3 molecules of fatty acids, also known as triglyceride or neutral fat. They are major constituents of fats and oils and provide a concentrated food energy stored in living organism as well as cooking fats and oils, margarines etc. Cholesterol is a sterol occurring widely in animal tissue and also in some plants and algae. It can exist as a free sterol or esterified with a long chain fatty acid. It is absorbed through the intestine or manufactured in the liver. It serves principally as a constituent of blood plasma, lipoprotein and of the lipid protein complex that form plasma membrane. Fatty acid is a long chain aliphatic carboxylic acid found in natural fats and oils, it is also a component of membrane phospholipid and glycolipid.
