Acid rain is mainly caused by the increased concentration (in the atmosphere) of

    A)                  CFCs and dust

    B)                  \[N{{O}_{2}}\]and \[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    C)                  \[N{{O}_{2}},S{{O}_{2}},N{{H}_{3}},{{H}_{2}}S\]and dust

    D)                  \[N{{H}_{3}}\]and \[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Acid rain is the precipitation having a pH value of less than about 5.0 which has adverse effect on the fauna and flora, on which it falls. Rainwater has a pH value of 5.6 due to the presence of dissolved \[C{{O}_{2}}\]. Acid rain results from emission into the atmosphere of various pollutant gases, particularly \[S{{O}_{2}}\] and various oxides of nitrogen, which originate from burning of fossil fuel, car exhaust fumes etc. CFCs (Chloro Fluoro Carbons) mainly act as ozone destroyer. Chief source of \[{{H}_{2}}S\] are decaying vegetation and animal matter especially in aquatic habitats. It causes headache, nausea, collapse, coma and finally death.
