    Duplication of DNA is called

    A)                  replication

    B)  transduction

    C)                  transcription

    D)  translocation

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

A duplication process that is accomplished by copying from a template is called replication, eg, reproduction at the level of DNA. Transduction is genetic recombination in bacteria mediated by bacteriophages. It is of 3 types: (i) Abortine: Bacterial DNA is injected by a phage into a bacterium but it does not replicate. (ii) Generalised: Any bacterial gene may be transform by a phage to a recipient bacterium and (iii) Restricted: Transfer of bacterial DNA by a temperate phage is restricted to only one site on bacterial chromosome. Phenomenon of transduction was discovered by N Zinder and J Lederberg in 1952. Transcription is the process, through which messenger RNA is formed along a DNA template. The enzyme RNA polymerase catalyses the formation of RNA from ribonucleotide triphosphate. Translocadon is the change in position of a segment of a chromosome to another part of the same chromosome or to a different chromosome.
