    Grana are present inside the

    A)                  mitochondria

    B)  chloroplast

    C)                  endoplasmic reticulum

    D)  ribosome

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Chloroplast of higher plants is ovoid or discoidal structure surrounded by two unit membranes and consists of lamellar structure embedded in granular stroma. In higher plants, stroma contains small cylindrical structures called grana, which are seats for the light reaction of photosynthesis. Mitochondria are small granular or filamentous bodies, which are called the ?power house of the cell.? They are associated with respiration and are sources of energy. Mitochondrion is bounded by two membranes- the outer membrane and the inner membrane. Outer membrane is smooth but inner membrane is folded into finger like projections called cristae. Endoplasmic Reticulum consists of an interconnected system of membrane bound channels in the cytoplasm. It assumes the form of cistemae, tubules or vesicles. The cistemae are broad, flat membrane bound space, arranged parallel to each other to form lamellae. Tubules appear as circle in endoplasmic reticulum and vesicles as membrane bound isolated globose cavities. Ribosomes are the smallest organelle of the cell. In eukaryotes, they are either free in the cytoplasm or attached to the membranes of endoplasmic reticulum by glycoprotein called ribophorins. They are the site of protein synthesis.
