    A)                  Dixon and Jolly

    B)  Prof R C Sirohi

    C)                  J C Bose

    D)  Slatyer and Tayler

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The term "Water potential" was given by ?Slatyer and Tayler?. It is defined as the difference between the chemical potential of water in biological system and chemical potential of pure water at the same temperature and pressure. It is manifested as a force acting on water molecule in a solution separated from pure water by a membrane that is permeable to water molecule only and can be expressed as the sum of the solute potential and the pressure potential.                                 \[\Psi ={{\Psi }_{S}}+{{\Psi }_{P}}\] It is measured in kilo-pascals (KPa). Water potential of pure water is zero. Dixon and Jolly gave cohesion theory of Ascent of sap also known as Dixons cohesion theory. J C Bose gave vital theory, which accounts for the upward movement of water by the activity of living cells of the plant bordering xylem.
