Which one of the following is obtained when acetone is treated with bleaching powder?

    A)  \[C{{H}_{3}}Cl\]

    B)  \[C{{H}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[CHC{{l}_{3}}\]

    D)  \[CC{{l}_{4}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

When acetone is treated with bleaching powder, then chloroform is formed, Bleaching powder \[(CaOC{{l}_{2}})\] supplies the necessary chlorine and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) for the reaction.                 \[\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  bleaching \\  powder \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{CaOC{{l}_{2}}}}\,+{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  slaked \\  \lim e \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{Ca{{(OH)}_{2}}}}\,+C{{l}_{2}}\] Chlorine so obtained acts as a chlorinating agent. It reacts with acetone and gives trichloroacetone which formed chloroform on hydrolysis. \[\underset{acetone}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}}}\,+3C{{l}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{trichloroacetone}{\mathop{C\,.\,\,C{{l}_{3}}\,.\,COC{{H}_{3}}}}\,\]                                                                                 \[+3HCl\]             \[Ca{{(OH)}_{2}}+2CC{{l}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{chloroform}{\mathop{2CHC{{l}_{3}}}}\,\]                                                 \[+{{(C{{H}_{3}}COO)}_{2}}Ca\]                                                 calcium acetate This is the laboratory method of chloroform preparation. Note - Ethyl alcohol also gives chloroform with bleaching ponder. In this reaction bleaching powder functions as oxidising, chtorinating and hydrolysing agent.
