At constant T and p which one of the following statements is correct for the reaction? \[CO(g)+\frac{1}{2}{{O}_{2}}(g)\xrightarrow{{}}C{{O}_{2}}(g)\]

    A)  \[\Delta H>\Delta E\]

    B)  \[\Delta H<\Delta E\]

    C)  \[\Delta H=\Delta E\]

    D)  \[\Delta H\] is independent of physical state of reactants

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

                     Key Idea The relation between \[\Delta H\] and \[\Delta E\] is  given by                 \[\Delta H=\Delta E+\Delta {{n}_{g}}RT\] where \[\Delta {{n}_{g}}=\Sigma \] product of gaseous mole                                 \[-\Sigma \]readout of gaseous mole For the reaction                 \[CO(g)+\frac{1}{2}{{O}_{2}}(g)\xrightarrow{{}}C{{O}_{2}}(g)\] \[\Delta {{n}_{g}}=(1\,mol\,of\,C{{O}_{2}})\]                 \[-(1\,\,mol\,of\,CO+0.5\,\,mol\,of\,{{O}_{2}})\] \[\Delta {{n}_{g}}=-0.5\], ie, it is negative. Hence,  \[\Delta H<\Delta E\] Note - If               \[\Delta {{n}_{g}}=0\],   \[\Delta H=\Delta E\]                                 \[\Delta {{n}_{g}}=+ve\]               \[\Delta H>\Delta E\]
