Which of the following reactions occurs at the cathode?

    A)  \[S{{n}^{2+}}\xrightarrow{{}}S{{n}^{4+}}+2{{e}^{-}}\]

    B)  \[A{{g}^{+}}+\,\,{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}Ag\]

    C)  \[Zn\xrightarrow{{}}Z{{n}^{2+}}+2{{e}^{-}}\]

    D)  \[2O{{H}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}{{H}_{2}}O+\frac{1}{2}{{O}_{2}}+2{{e}^{-}}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Key Idea Reduction occurs at cathode. Oxidation occurs at anode. A chemical change during which an atom or ion loses electrons is called oxidation. While a chemical change in which an atom or ion gains electrons is called reduction.  \[S{{n}^{2+}}\xrightarrow{{}}S{{n}^{4+}}+2{{e}^{-}}\] Oxidation takes place.  \[A{{g}^{+}}+{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}Ag\] Reduction takes place.  \[Zn\xrightarrow{{}}Z{{n}^{2+}}+2{{e}^{-}}\] Oxidation takes place  \[2O{{H}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}{{H}_{2}}O+\frac{1}{2}{{O}_{2}}+2{{e}^{-}}\] Oxidation takes place. In the reaction  reduction takes place. Therefore, this reaction occurs at the cathode while in reactions ,  and  oxidation takes place. So, these reactions occur at anode.
