Which of the following is anucleated living plant cell?

    A)  Sieve tube

    B)  Vessel

    C)  Tracheid

    D)  All of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Sieve tubes are long, slender, tube-like structures involved in transport of solution of organic solutes like sucrose through out the plant. These are formed by end to end fusion of cells called sieve tube elements or sieve elements. A mature sieve tube contains cytoplasm but no nucleus. Its activities are regulated by the nucleus of associated companion cells. Vessels are characteristic conducting units of xylem in angiosperms. These are very long, tubular structures formed by the fusion of several cells, end to end in a row. Cells of vessels are dead. They are advanced type of conducting elements. Tracheids are elongated, tube like, dead cells with hard thick and lignified walls. Their end walls are tapered and overlap with adjacent tracheids. When mature, these are dead with empty lumen. They are primitive type of conducting elements in xylem and are present in all groups of vascular plants.
