    Haploid endosperm is found in

    A)  wheat

    B)  gram

    C)  gymnosperm

    D)  algae

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Gymnosperms (Gymno = naked + Sperma = seed) are commonly known as naked seed plants because their ovules are not covered and lie naked on the surface of specialized leaves, called Megasporophyll or ovuliferous scales, which are arranged in cones. In gymnosperm, fertilization is siphonogamic (through pollen tube). Development of embryo is meroblastic (ie, embryo develops only from a part of the zygote). Endosperm   develops before fertilization and thus haploid. Wheat and gram both belong to angiosperms, where the endosperm is the product of triple fusion and usually triploid. The term algae was introduced by Linnaeus and includes ?all holophytic organisms that fail to reach the level of differentiation characteristic of archegoniate plants?.
