    Thylakoids are present in

    A)  nucleus

    B)  mitochondria

    C)  chloroplast

    D)  cytoplasm

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Chloroplasts are double membrane bound organelles, ie, an outer membrane and inner membrane with an intermembrane space between them. In higher plants, the stroma contains small cylindrical structures called grana. Each granum consists of disc shaped membraneous sacs called thylakoids piles one on top of the other. Nucleus was discovered by Robert Brown in 1831. It contains the genetic material DNA organised into chromosomes. It functions as the control centre of the cell and is bounded by double membrane. Mitochondria were discovered by Kolliker and the term was coined by Benda. It is covered by a double membrane. The inner membrane is convoluted to form cristae or mitochondrial crest. Cytoplasm is the granular, crystallo-colloidal complex that fills the cell protoplast but excludes nucleus.
