When the Respiratory Quotient (RQ) is greater than 1, it indicates

    A)  only aerobic respiration is taking place

    B)  only anaerobic respiration is taking place

    C)  Both (a) and (b)

    D)  None of the above

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Respiratory Quotient (RQ) is defined as the ratio of volume of carbon dioxide evolved to the volume of oxygen consumed per unit time per unit weight. It is useful in knowing of the type of respiration, major transformation and respiratory substrate                 \[RQ=\frac{Volume\text{ }of\text{ }C{{O}_{2}}\,evolved}{Volume\text{ }of\,{{O}_{2}}\text{ }absorbed}\] eg, If RQ = 1, then the substrate is carbohydrate and type of respiration is aerobic and if RQ is infinity then the respiration is anaerobic respiration which occurs in several microbes and higher green plants. RQ is more than one in case of fatty acids, organic acid where both aerobic and anaerobic respiration take place.
