The leaves of Mimosa pudica when touched, droop down due to

    A)  seismonasty

    B)  epinasty

    C)  nyctinasty

    D)  All of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Mimosa pudica is a sensitive plant whose leaves droop down when touched. This type of movement is known as seismonasty. During this type of movement, turgor changes occur in thin walled cells of pulvinus (lower side) and pulvinnules (upper side) causing folding of pinnules, coming together of pinnae and drooping of the compound leaves. Epinastic movement of plant is governed by greater growth on adaxial side, eg, opening of flower. Nyctinasty is night inducing bending movement of leaves, eg, balsam and papaya.
